Compulsive Masturbation in Teenagers

Compulsive Masturbation. I am a 16 year old male and for as long as I can remember (probably 3-4 years) I have been dealing with compulsive masturbation issues. This issue derived from when I was 7, and as dumb as this sounds, all of my problems that I currently have to deal with today originated from being exposed to a **lot** of porn on Roblox. At the time, I didn't really think much of it... but over the years it started to manifest sexual problems in me. From being desensitized, to changing how I interpreted women in public, these problems caused a ripple effect furthermore altering my life for the worse. Although I could go into more detail about these problems, I will stay on track and return to the question at hand: is it natural to feel these urges as a teenager, or is there something truly wrong with me? In addition, how can I heal myself and not resort to masturbation? Fighting this uphill battle has been very difficult and I really just want to put a nail in the coffin for good. Many people view this problem as silly and think that it doesn't need attention, but it has caused me an **excruciating** amount of pain and regret over the years that I will never be able to take back. I would argue the opposite though, every time I end up caving into it I feel depressed and trapped in an endless cycle of my own hormones that I have no control of. Speaking in terms of the present, I have been trying to take action to heal myself by doing yoga to strengthen my mind. I have also restricted how much dopamine my brain is allowed to have in an attempt to heal my neurotransmitters from the tension I put on them over the years. This solution I have made has limited to how often I do *it* to most of the time 2 weeks apart. The last thing I would like to say is that what bothers me the most about masturbation is what it does to my memory. I have been studying computer science over the summer and it has been really difficult because every time I have to do *it*, I experience brain fog as a result and in turn may forget about some stuff I learned. Thank you for reading and I hope someone can answer my question.

Firstly, it’s important to know that what you’re experiencing is not uncommon. Many teenagers have strong sexual urges due to hormonal changes during puberty. However, when these urges feel uncontrollable and lead to negative feelings, it can be distressing.

Masturbation itself is a natural activity, but when it becomes compulsive, it can interfere with daily life, cause feelings of guilt, and impact mental health. Your awareness and desire to change this habit are commendable steps towards improving your well-being.

Your exposure to explicit content at a young age and the subsequent desensitisation to sexual stimuli might have contributed to your current situation. This is something many people face and can overcome with the right strategies.

Here are some suggestions to help manage your compulsive urges:

  • Limit Exposure to Triggers: Avoid situations or content that stimulate the urge to masturbate. This includes reducing screen time and avoiding explicit material.
  • Create a Routine: Keeping yourself busy with activities such as studying, sports, or hobbies can distract your mind from sexual urges.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Practices like yoga and meditation can help you gain better control over your thoughts and reduce stress. You’re already doing yoga, which is great!
  • Seek Professional Help: Sometimes talking to a therapist can provide strategies tailored to your needs. They can help you understand and manage your urges better.
  • Join Support Groups: Online forums or local groups for teens facing similar issues can provide support and tips on overcoming compulsive behaviours.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep can improve your overall mental health, making it easier to control impulses.
